Key topics for innovation

How are innovations changing the design of interior spaces? Furniture technology and components, as well as surfaces and materials for interior design, are constantly being innovated and refined. The associated transformation processes are currently undergoing dynamic change. interzum, through its global partner events, highlights the key topics that play a role in this evolution. interzum in Cologne, Bogotá, Jakarta, and Guangzhou, as well as the interzum forum italy in Bergamo, provide important platforms for dialogue and exchange within the international supplier industry. They connect the topics of materials and production with the fields of furniture, design, and market-ready solutions. In doing so, they showcase the industry’s innovations and forward-looking developments in interior design.

From space to integrated systems

Through presentations, lectures, and panel discussions, interzum and its partner events shed light on future-oriented topics such as the smart integration of living functions or the combination of furniture design and spatial planning with AI. Companies, designers, and industry partners come together here to discover groundbreaking industry trends. A clear trend is emerging in interior design: Today, people want living and working environments that are versatile, easy to understand, and emotionally appealing. This is less about individual interior design styles and more about flexible and adaptive spatial systems that can be tailored to changing needs.

Space concept for compact living

Modern space concepts make individual functional areas an integral part of an overall system. The typology and function of rooms are thus undergoing dynamic change. “Dynamic Living” was the title of a project study on compact living that Häfele presented at the recent interzum trade show in Cologne. The focus was on designing small spaces to be as versatile and comfortable as possible. On display was an 18-square-meter apartment whose walls could be easily moved using magnetic sliding technology. Integrated hardware and lighting systems further enhanced spatial flexibility. Activities such as cooking, dining, living, sleeping, and working can be flexibly combined in the study as needed.

Design for mobile spaces of tomorrow

Such adaptable and flexible space solutions are particularly relevant in large cities with limited space—such as Jakarta, Indonesia. As the central hub for the local furniture industry, the recent interzum jakarta also showcased an innovative space concept. Visitors to the interzum partner fair, held in September 2026, were able to explore, among other things, a “Mobile Space Showcase”. Created in collaboration with interior designer Rica Ishak, this immersive installation combined interior architecture with technical precision to shape the mobile spaces of tomorrow. It demonstrated how a modular concept, thoughtful spatial design, and a thoughtful selection of materials can transform compact spaces into warm, functional, and inviting environments.

Evolution of living and spatial concepts

Installations such as “Dynamic Living” or the “Mobile Space Showcase” in Jakarta highlight just how much materials, components, and technologies have become cross-sector elements today. As a result, they can influence a wide range of application scenarios. This was also evident at this year’s interzum forum italy in Bergamo. The conference accompanying the trade show—part of interzum’s partner event held in June—addressed, among other topics, the impact of innovation and changing lifestyles on interior design. For example, the conference highlighted how the kitchen, as a functional space, can be integrated into residential architecture. Hybrid living environments with a focus on well-being and IoT-connected home systems were also widely discussed topics. Additionally, the conference addressed sectors that are playing an increasingly important role in interior design, such as commercial projects, recreational vehicles, and the maritime industry.

Showcases for forward-looking ideas

The global interzum showcases also offer further inspiration for the furniture and interior design industries. With a special themed area within the framework of another trade show, they highlight forward-looking solutions for the design of commercial, hospitality, and residential spaces. As a curated product exhibition, they bring together global innovations in a targeted format. The next interzum showcase will take place during the upcoming ORGATEC in Cologne from October 27 to 30, 2026. Innovative technologies, materials, and components from selected suppliers will then offer a glimpse into the future of new work environments.

Putting people first

The upcoming interzum guangzhou will also focus on projects and solutions that utilize innovative components, materials, and technologies. Under the theme “WeMake – Beyond Craft, Toward Care”, the Chinese counterpart to Cologne’s interzum—taking place from March 28 to 31, 2027—will place the needs of users at the center of attention. Topics will include technological innovations and international collaboration, among others. This is based on the conviction that people-centered thinking is the foundation for the future of the supply industry. Together, the goal is to design spaces for the living environments of tomorrow with intelligent solutions for furniture and interior design.

The next interzum in Cologne will take place from May 11 to 14, 2027, with the theme “Beyond Boundaries: Elevating Strategic Resilience.”
