Sustainable adhesives are innovative products made from renewable raw materials. They are an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional, petrochemical-based adhesives. The main advantages of sustainable adhesives are: - Reducing the carbon footprint by using bio-based raw materials - Improving indoor air quality by reducing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) Despite their benefits, sustainable adhesives can vary in terms of performance and durability. Research in this area aims to further improve the properties of these adhesives to fulfil industry requirements. A brief overview of different approaches and results from current research projects will be given. This includes the use of sugar aldehydes as a formaldehyde substitute in classic condensation resins, the use of fungi as self-growing adhesives for the production of wood-based materials and reversibly crosslinkable adhesives whose adhesive effect can be repeatedly switched ON and OFF.
