It’s not just the international supplier industry that meets at the leading international fair for the furniture and interior construction industries’ supplying sections, the Cologne-based event has always focused on the next generation too. On 24 May, the VDID NEWCOMERS’ AWARD will be presented at interzum – with Koelnmesse as the main sponsor. Talented young industrial designers have until 20 March 2019 to submit their university projects or final degree assignments.
The German Association of Industrial Designers (VDID) uses its NEWCOMERS’ AWARD to recognise outstanding academic achievements, thereby offering aspiring industrial designers a platform on which to present their work to the public. “The submissions received every two years clearly demonstrate the high level of design education in Germany,” says Stefan Eckstein, VDID President.
Together with his colleagues on the jury panel, Stefan Eckstein, who himself helps shape the design language with his studio Eckstein Design, is looking for the best student projects and final degree assignments at German universities from the years 2017 to 2019. Entries can be submitted in all areas of product and industrial design – from household and interior to industrial and office through to interface design – until 20 March. At the end of the selection process, three equal main prizes will be awarded. There will also be a special prize for “Light in product design”. The assessment criteria for the prizes have changed little from the criteria for good design laid down by the association when it was founded in 1959: meaningfulness, user-friendliness, usability, sustainability, values and aesthetic quality – these are the key points that determine the quality of the designs.
For Maik Fischer, Director of interzum, this way of fostering the next generation is hugely important: “Today, innovation requires cooperation between different disciplines, by which I mean a dialogue between development and application, between established companies and start-ups, between young and old. As the global meeting place for the industry, interzum not only offers a unique platform for the presentation of product innovations for the design of future living environments, we also provide a forum in which a highly diverse range of people can meet on an equal footing – even including industry representatives and the young talent who may go on to revolutionise the products of tomorrow.” Koelnmesse is the principal sponsor of the awards and also provides the exhibition venue: the winning projects will be displayed for the duration of the interzum 2019 trade fair for maximum public exposure.
The awards presentation itself will take place on the final day of the fair – 24 May – as part of the VDID’s Industrial Design Day conference.
As well as promoting young talent, the competition entries regularly provide the industry with valuable inspiration and reflect the status of current developments. As Stefan Eckstein puts it, “The job description has changed. Industrial design work is increasingly driven by digital interfaces and process management. And you can see that in the submissions for the award too: purely digital solutions to problems and conceptual competition entries are on the increase and show that universities have built up strong expertise with regard to user experience and strategy development.”
