“Light carries”: new designs by GERA Leuchten
16 Jan 2017
The Light Shelves by GERA Leuchten combine two usually separate functions: load-bearing furniture elements and room lighting. The Thuringia-based company presented its new launches under the slogan “Light carries” at imm cologne 2017 from 16 to 22 January. They include two lights designed by students – the innovative results of a long-term collaboration that has its origins in an initiative by interzum.
The latest designs by GERA Leuchten are a translucent sideboard, a minimalist light shelf, a ceiling light and a pendant light. Product development at the company follows a clear philosophy: “Light requires a source and not a lamp,” as Designer and Product Manager Thomas Ritt puts it. The light systems manufacturer makes use of the possibilities of LED lighting to create new design concepts: furniture-like lights and light furniture with integrated lighting technology. Its current slogan, “Light carries”, points to this dual functionality. The products combine load-bearing elements in the form of shelves with room lighting. The designers at GERA Leuchten see lighting as an architectural element: they conceive light and furniture as a functional unit that designs and structures spaces.
All four new products that were presented at imm cologne 2017 are an expression of this architectural relevance. This approach is also echoed in another key element of the company’s appearance at the trade fair: alongside the new launches, two light designs developed by students at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle will also be on show. The collaboration with the university is a long-term relationship and has its roots in the interzum initiative MaterialTransformation. The networking platform brought the design school and GERA Leuchten together so that they could develop new, innovative and unusual ideas. The new product designs on display at imm cologne are proof that the creative exchange is working.
