BASF is committed to enable industrial scale recycling of End-of-Life foam mattresses. According to the European Bedding Industry Association, up to 30 million mattresses annually reach their end of life and it is estimated that throughout Europe more than 80 % are incinerated or dumped in landfills. Reasons for this being e.g. hygiene concerns towards reuse and limited usage options for the various components.
The presentation of Christopher Metz highlights how BASF, a raw material supplier for foam and mattress producers, leverages its broad chemicals expertise to
- provide circular product offerings to the foaming and mattress industry, and
- how our vision of a future circular mattress business looks like.
Key to our efforts is the development of an advanced chemical recycling technology that will enable the reuse of the foam based recyclates to produce virgin-quality mattresses. With this circular economy approach BASF aims to effectively contribute to overall CO2 saving and decouple economic growth from the use of finite resources.
