The event

The two first industrial-scale plants to reclaim polyols out of end-of-life polyurethane (PU) mattresses will be built in Europe. The declared goal is to convert polyurethane waste arising from EoL mattresses into high-quality recovered polyols suitable for application in rigid and flexible PU products without compromising their quality. This will contribute to the reduction in landfill and incineration streams significantly and is aligned to the goals of EU waste regulation to recycle 65% of municipal waste by 2030. Since CO2 emissions while producing circular polyols are significantly lower than emissions arising during the production of conventional ones the projects will help to reduce carbon footprint also. Beside positive environmental impact, the technology developed by H&S prevents PU down-cycling and enables winning added-value products.

The first project is a result of a successful collaboration between Dow Europe and H&S and is part of the RENUVA™ Mattress Recycling Program.

The first batch of RENUVA™ polyols is expected to be delivered in the first half of 2021.The second project is the initiative of IKEA Group and its new partner RetourMatras BV, the biggest mattress recycling company within the Netherlands. The start-up of the recycling plant is scheduled for the first half of 2022.

In both projects H&S is contributing as equipment and know-how provider.
