One of the most important materials for mattresses is Polyurethane, as it is key to create the right comfort in a mattress. Innovation drivers in the industry are therefore keen on finding solutions to make PU fully recyclable. Beside mechanical solutions and other sustainable improvements some pioneering steps towards a true circular economy have already been achieved. Bart Haelterman, Innovation Manager and Corporate HS&E Manager at Recticel, is involved in the EU-funded PUReSmart project together with other industry players. In this interview, he describes how highly efficient recycling technologies can be used to break down old foam to its original components, so that they can be re-used for new mattress cores.
