What does circularity truly mean—and how can design be a powerful tool to drive it forward? In this lecture, we explore the essential role of design in building circular systems, where materials and products are reused, (re-)cycled, and repurposed to minimize waste and preserve resources.
Designers are no longer just shaping products—they are shaping systems. Through strategic choices in materials, construction, and collaboration, design can influence everything from product life cycles to business models. But designers are not alone in this challenge. Brands, manufacturers, and (re-)cyclers must work together to create a connected value chain that supports true circularity.
This session examines the shared responsibilities across the chain and highlights the critical conditions needed to close the loop—from product development and transparency to disassembly and reverse logistics.
Drawing from real-world cases such as the Transparent Circularity Project in the mattress industry and innovations from the fashion sector, we will uncover both the opportunities and complexities of circular transitions. The session will also introduce the Circle of Circularity, a newly launched initiative that promotes systems thinking, cross-sector co-creation, and circular leadership.
The audience will leave with fresh insights into how circular design can be a driver for systemic change—along with practical principles to start applying circular thinking in their own fields.
Welcome to the Circle of Circularity —where design is the starting point for transformation.
